UNITED NIGERIA AIRLINES WITHDRAWS AIRCRAFT AFTER "BOAT STRIKE" AT LAGOS AIRPORT

LAGOS – United Nigeria Airlines has withdrawn one of its Embraer 190 aircraft from service following what the airline described as a "boat strike" during arrival at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.


The incident occurred on September 1, 2026, during the arrival of flight UNO523, the airline confirmed in a statement posted on its official platform.


In a move the airline said was in line with its safety protocols, the affected aircraft has been pulled from service for further inspection and maintenance. However, the development is expected to cause disruptions to the airline's schedule and lead to the cancellation or rescheduling of some flights.


Aviation industry observers are questioning how a boat could come into contact with an aircraft at an international airport, raising concerns about perimeter security and access control at Nigeria's busiest aviation hub.


The airline has not disclosed the extent of the damage or how long the aircraft would be out of service.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority is said to be monitoring the situation and awaiting a full incident report.
