UN Deputy Secretary-General Commends Imo State's Digital Transformation Drive

UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed has praised the Imo State Government for its significant strides in digital transformation, youth empowerment, economic diversification, and public sector reforms, identifying the initiatives as a strong foundation for sustainable development.


Mohammed conveyed the commendation while leading a high-level delegation on a courtesy visit to Governor Hope Uzodimma on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at the new Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Owerri.


"The UN values its partnership with Imo State," Mohammed said. "Our current engagement supports immunisation, disease surveillance, emergency preparedness, health data, climate-smart agriculture, nutrition, livelihoods, and youth employability."


She further noted that through the UNFPA-UNICEF joint programme, the UN supports efforts to eliminate challenges facing communities in partnership with traditional and religious leaders. "Through UNDP, the EU and Federal Government of Nigeria, the Nigerian Jubilee Fellows Programme and other related initiatives are helping to accompany you in your journey of development."


Governor Uzodimma explained that his administration intentionally positions technology to curb unemployment, improve security, and reduce reliance on public sector jobs.


"The clean cooking initiatives from UNDP and our gas utilisation plan—we will have, as a government, working in partnership with our global partners, created an industrial development plan, which has been approved," the Governor stated. "The whole idea is to create industrial clusters and allow the industries to be powered with gas."
