ISIALA MBANO, NIGERIA – In a sweeping move to restore discipline to the local government system, the Imo State Local Government Service Commission has issued a stark ultimatum to workers: show up or risk losing your job.


During a high-stakes monitoring visit to the Isiala Mbano Local Government Area, Commission Chairman Dr. Obinatu (addressing staff alongside Chief Ethelbert Nwachukwu and others) laid down the law, describing the rampant absenteeism as "morally indefensible."


The commission has zeroed in on a particularly brazen practice: staff members who have left the country but continue to receive monthly salaries, with colleagues illegally covering for them by signing attendance registers. "Those involved could lose their jobs," Dr. Obinatu warned, adding that this "loitering" culture during official hours would not be tolerated.


While Dr. Obinatu praised the turnout at the Maisala Headquarters, he noted that attendance could still be "improved." He advised workers who live far away to "rent accommodation closer to their places of posting" to ensure punctuality. With the commission determined to "restore the lost glory" of the system, he assured diligent workers of promotions, but made it clear that the era of "signing in for ghosts" is over.
