Tears / Tributes in Anambra as IMSU Mass Comm Class of 2001 Bids Farewell to Late Chidimma Okoye

Owerri/Ojoto — It was a somber yet profoundly reflective atmosphere in Ojoto, Anambra State, as family, friends, and colleagues gathered at the compound of the Okoye family to bid a final, emotional farewell to the late Chidimma Obiamaka Okoye (FSP).

Among the many sympathizers who traveled from far and wide to pay their last respects was the Imo State University (IMSU) Mass Communication Class of 2001. Representing the Alumni Association at the funeral service were Vivian Iwu and Josephine Godwin, who stood in solidarity with the family to honor their departed colleague.


The funeral service was officiated by Rev. Fr. Paul Obiaka, the Parish Priest of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Ojoto. In a deeply moving and encouraging homily, Fr. Obiaka addressed the grieving family, particularly Chidimma’s mother and siblings, reminding them that the mystery of death respects neither age nor timeline.

In a poignant moment of reflection, the cleric noted just how young Chidimma was, recalling that she was born around the same time he was writing his West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

 "Age and death are not specified for any human being," Fr. Obiaka emphasized, noting that both the young and the old are called home by God at times unknown to mortals.


Fr. Obiaka urged the congregation to look beyond human opinions and focus on their relationship with the Creator. He stated that while every human being has a story attached to them, the story written by God is the only authentic one. Therefore, humanity must strive to live right in the sight of God rather than living to please the world.

He strongly encouraged the mourners to:

 * Do good at every opportunity.

 * Reconcile differences with one another.

 * Make Intentional Peace so that when the time comes, they may experience the beautiful gift of dying peacefully.


Following the homily, one of Chidimma’s brothers delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks on behalf of the family, expressing deep gratitude to the attendees who came from all walks of life to support them in their hour of grief.

Fr. Obiaka then led the congregation in the solemn Liberation Prayer. As a baptized and confirmed Catholic, special prayers were offered for Chidimma, invoking the promises of Jesus Christ—that anyone who believes in Him shall never die, and whoever dies in Him shall live forever.

With final blessings and tears, the young Communication Professional was gently laid to rest in her father’s compound, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and cherished memories among her IMSU 2001 Classmates and all who knew her.

May her soul find eternal rest, and may God comfort the Okoye family.
