NEW YORK CITY TO BAN AI FOR STUDENTS THROUGH 8TH GRADE – SOURCE

NEW YORK – New York City will ban the use of artificial intelligence for public school students through eighth grade, a source close to the matter has confirmed, as concerns mount over the technology's impact on children's mental health and cognitive development.


Teachers and parents have warned against AI use in schools, citing risks of harming children's mental health, stunting cognitive development, and causing environmental damage from the massive energy consumption of AI systems.


Under the new policy, AI use will only be allowed in high school, beginning from ninth grade, and even then, it will be limited to specific uses such as learning about the technology itself, the source said.


Eighth graders in the U.S. are typically about 14 years old.


The decision reflects growing global concern about AI's impact on young learners, with some studies suggesting that excessive reliance on AI tools can hamper critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Environmental groups have also raised red flags about the carbon footprint of AI systems.


The ban does not apply to private schools or educational technology used for special needs students.
