NCDC Warns of Ongoing Cholera Transmission as Death Toll Rises to 25 in Plateau

ABUJA – The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has issued a stark warning that Cholera Transmission remains ongoing across the country, urging States to sustain preventive measures as Plateau State reports 25 deaths from 143 suspected Cases.


NCDC Director General, Dr. Jide Idris, gave the warning during a briefing in Abuja, stating that while the decline in Cholera deaths is encouraging, it should not create a false sense of security.


According to the Agency, more than 65,000 suspected Cholera Cases have been recorded across 35 States and about 195 Local Government Areas this year.


Dr. Idris noted that Enugu State remains the only State yet to report a Cholera Case in 2026, attributing this to proactive measures by the State Government.



"I have visited Enugu more than once and had discussions with the State Commissioner for health and the Governor," he said. "My observations confirmed the measures being implemented."


In Plateau State, Commissioner for Health, Dr. Clexus Chokok, disclosed that the State has recorded 25 deaths with 143 suspected Cases.


Residents in affected States, including Imo, have been advised to maintain proper hygiene, use safe drinking water, and seek medical attention promptly if they develop symptoms such as frequent watery diarrhoea or vomiting.
