GOMBE STATE TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS BEGIN TWO-WEEK WARNING STRIKE OVER UNPAID ENTITLEMENTS

GOMBE – Academic and non-academic staff of all tertiary institutions in Gombe State have commenced a two-week warning strike over the state government's alleged failure to implement and pay outstanding staff welfare entitlements.


The strike, which began at midnight, involves five unions: the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Senior Staff Union of Colleges of Education in Nigeria, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics, and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions.


In a communique issued following a joint meeting, the unions said they had earlier issued a 14-day ultimatum to the state government on August 17, demanding action on outstanding welfare issues affecting workers in public institutions across the state.


The strike threatens to disrupt academic activities as the new semester is scheduled to begin in many institutions. Students have expressed frustration, with some calling on the government to urgently address the workers' concerns.


The Gombe State Government has yet to officially respond to the strike action.


The unions have warned that if their demands are not met after the two-week warning strike, they would proceed with an indefinite industrial action.
