The Eze Imo Palace in Owerri played host yesterday to a moment steeped in cultural pageantry and political symbolism, as Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, National Chairman of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), was formally received by the Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers during an official working visit to the State.


The courtesy call, which drew traditional rulers from across Imo's ancestral stools, formed part of a broader itinerary that saw the First Lady engage directly with the custodians of Igbo culture and governance — a gesture widely read as both an acknowledgment of the monarchs' social influence and a reaffirmation of federal government ties with the South-East.


In a display of the region's enduring respect for ceremony, the Council conferred upon the First Lady the chieftaincy title "Oso Di Eme 1 of Igboland", — an honour, palace sources indicated, given in recognition of her sustained advocacy for women, children, and vulnerable communities through initiatives run under the Renewed Hope Initiative umbrella.


Chieftaincy titles of this nature carry significant weight within Igbo traditional structures, often reserved for individuals whose contributions are seen as transcending mere political office to touch the social fabric of the community. By bestowing the title, the Council effectively wove the First Lady into the traditional leadership lattice of the state — a symbolic bridge between Abuja's corridors of power and Imo's ancestral institutions.


During remarks at the palace, the First Lady turned her attention to the performance of the State's administration, commending what she described as the remarkable strides recorded under Governor Hope Uzodimma, CON, and expressing gratitude to Imolites for their support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.


Her comments dovetailed with a statement issued afterward by Imo State's First Lady, Mrs. Chioma Uzodimma, Esq. — herself a prominent voice in the RHI structure as its Secretary, alongside her roles as founder of the GoodHope Women Flourish Initiative and Chairperson of First Ladies Against Cancer. In her remarks, Mrs. Uzodimma expressed the State's gratitude for what she called impactful interventions targeting women, children, and vulnerable groups, closing with a warm charge in Igbo: "Jisie ike na ọrụ ọma gị" — loosely, "be strong in your good work."



Beyond the pageantry, the visit underscores a recurring theme in Nigeria's political landscape: the deliberate cultivation of relationships between the presidency and subnational power structures — both elected and traditional — as a means of consolidating support ahead of policy rollouts and, observers note, future political calculations.


The alignment on display — from the Renewed Hope Initiative's welfare programming to the traditional institution's ceremonial endorsement — reflects a coordinated effort to project unity between the federal government, Imo's state leadership, and the custodians of its cultural heritage.


For the traditional rulers of Imo, the visit offered a platform to reaffirm their council's relevance in contemporary governance. For the First Lady, it added another chapter — and now a traditional title — to a public profile increasingly built around advocacy for women and children under the Renewed Hope banner.
