First Lady Flags Off Southeast Women Empowerment Programme in Owerri

In a significant push towards economic inclusion and poverty alleviation, the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, officially flagged off the Southeast phase of the Renewed Hope Initiative Women Empowerment Programme on Monday, September 9, 2026, at the Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu Square in Owerri.


The nationwide scheme, executed in partnership with the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, aims to support 500 vulnerable women in each state across the region. Speaking at the launch, Senator Tinubu revealed that the programme is part of a broader national drive designed to reach 15,500 female beneficiaries nationwide.


Selected women beneficiaries in each Southeast state will receive empowerment items including gifts, cheques, gas cookers, ovens, generators, and industrial grinding machines to support them in starting or expanding their businesses.


Governor Hope Uzodimma, who attended the event, described the items being distributed as "vital economic lifelines for the poor and vulnerable."


"Today we are gathered for a noble cause, and that is the presentation of empowerment items to 2,500 women in our state," the Governor said. "This is a part of a wider effort reaching every state of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory."


He commended the Renewed Hope Initiative for its tireless support of the federal government's agenda, praising the First Lady's "vigorous leadership" in reaching out to the grassroots, fighting for peace and stability, and restoring the dignity of women.
