Three prominent sons of Mbaise whose contributions have shaped politics, business and public service are set to be honoured as the Federation of Mbaise Media Professionals (FMMP) unveils the recipients of its 2026 Awards of Excellence, ahead of this year's Pre-Iri Ji Public Lecture.


The distinguished awardees are Professor James Okoroma, Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC); Mr. Tony Osuagwu, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of Calaya Engineering Services Limited; and former Imo State Commissioner for Homeland Security, Dr. Ugoji Okechukwu Ugorji.


The awards will be presented during the FMMP Pre-Iri Ji Public Lecture and Awards Ceremony, scheduled for Thursday, August 13, 2026, at Chris VI Hotels, Ahiara, Mbaise, with the President-General of Ezuruezu Mbaise, Sir Surveyor Joe Anosikeh, presiding as Chairman.


FMMP said the awardees were carefully selected in recognition of their remarkable achievements in their respective professions and their enduring contributions to community development, leadership, entrepreneurship and public service.


While Professor Okoroma has remained an influential voice in Nigeria's political landscape, Tony Osuagwu has built a reputation in the oil and gas sector through Calaya Engineering Services Limited, creating opportunities within and beyond the South-East. Dr. Ugorji, on his part, is being recognised for his contributions to security administration and public service.


The organisers described the awards as more than ceremonial honours, saying they are intended to celebrate excellence while encouraging younger generations to pursue purposeful leadership and service to society.


The Pre-Iri Ji Lecture has over the years evolved into one of Mbaise's foremost intellectual gatherings, bringing together traditional rulers, government officials, academics, professionals, business leaders and media practitioners to examine issues affecting the future of the Mbaise nation.


This year's event is expected to draw a large audience from across Imo State and beyond, with discussions expected to focus on leadership, development, culture and nation-building.


Organisers expressed optimism that the combination of a public lecture and the recognition of distinguished personalities would further strengthen the event's reputation as a platform for celebrating achievement while inspiring the next generation of leaders.


As preparations for the annual Iri Ji festivities gather momentum across Mbaise, the FMMP ceremony is expected to serve as one of the major intellectual and social highlights leading to the celebration.
