IMSU Academic Showdown: ASUU Declares Total Strike Over Unmet Agreements, Management Debunks "Fake" Shutdown Notice

​Owerri, Imo State — Academic activities at the Imo State University (IMSU), Owerri, have been thrown into severe uncertainty as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), IMSU Branch, officially declared a total and indefinite strike starting today, Monday, August 10, 2026.

​The industrial action comes on the heels of the non-implementation of the 2025 ASUU-FGN agreement. According to a press conference text jointly signed by the Chairperson, Stephen Oguji, and Secretary, Lazarus Chikwendu, the union stated that despite agreements signed on December 23, 2025—which took effect on January 1, 2026, and have already been implemented in states like Bauchi, Ekiti, Ogun, Osun, and Sokoto—IMSU management and the Imo State government have failed to comply.


GRIEVANCES & UNMET DEMANDS

ASUU-IMSU listed a litany of grievances forcing the indefinite shutdown, which include:

​Non-implementation of the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement in IMSU.

​The continuous retention of IMSU in the Treasury Single Account (TSA), which the union argues has led to a complete erosion of university autonomy.

​Non-payment of promotion arrears dating back to 2016 and months of unpaid salaries for several members.

​Withholding of 21 months of check-off dues and non-payment of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) since 2009.

​The union vowed never to return to work until the agreement is fully implemented, calling on well-meaning Nigerians, traditional institutions, civil society organizations, student bodies, and parents to prevail on the Visitor to the university to intervene.

​Management Fires Back: IMSU Debunks Fake Release, Insists Exams Have Commenced

​In a swift counter-development, the Public Relations Unit of Imo State University, led by the Ag. Public Relations Officer, Dr. Onyekachi Augustus Nwaozor, has issued a strong disclaimer regarding a doctored press release circulating online.

​The university management declared that a morning release titled "NOTICE TO STUDENTS: 2025/2026 SECOND SEMESTER EXAMINATION HAS COMMENCED" was fraudulently altered to read "NOTICE TO STUDENTS: 2025/2026 INDEFINITE INDUSTRIAL STRIKE ACTION".

​Management clarified that:

​The claim that academic activities are suspended for five months is entirely false.

​The 2025/2026 Second Semester Examinations have officially commenced as scheduled.

​Students have been strongly advised to ignore rumors of postponement, show up for their papers, and steer clear of exam malpractice. The university warned that any student who misses an examination based on false rumors does so at their own risk.
