Imo Among States Recording Major Security Breakthroughs as Police Intensify Nationwide Crackdown

The Nigeria Police Force has announced a series of major operational successes recorded across the country between August 1 and August 2, 2026, with Imo State emerging as one of the states where intelligence-led operations delivered significant breakthroughs in the ongoing fight against kidnapping, cultism, terrorism, armed robbery and other violent crimes.

According to a nationwide operational update released by the Force Headquarters, coordinated security operations led to multiple arrests, the recovery of sophisticated weapons and ammunition, the rescue of kidnapped victims and the disruption of criminal networks across several states.

In Imo State, police operatives recorded notable successes following intelligence-driven operations targeting criminal elements allegedly linked to violent activities in the state.

Among those arrested was a suspected native doctor whom investigators alleged had been collaborating with members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

Security operatives also raided a suspected cult initiation camp where a suspected cult member was apprehended.

During the operation, police recovered:

* Two Beretta pistols

* One locally fabricated pistol

* Live ammunition

Police authorities said the suspect and exhibits have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Owerri, for comprehensive investigation and possible prosecution.

The latest arrests are expected to strengthen ongoing efforts by security agencies to dismantle criminal networks operating within the state.

Beyond Imo, security operations recorded encouraging outcomes across other South-East states.

In Enugu State, a joint security operation led to the arrest of five suspects, while security operatives recovered firearms, live cartridges and motorcycles believed to have been used in criminal activities.

The operation also resulted in the successful rescue of an abducted church official, although authorities disclosed that efforts were continuing to secure the freedom of other victims still in captivity.

In Anambra State, detectives arrested a man described by police as a notorious kidnapping and armed robbery suspect allegedly linked to several abduction cases.

Investigators also recovered mobile phones and electronic devices reportedly containing operational voice recordings and incriminating videos that may assist ongoing investigations into kidnapping activities in the state.

Police also highlighted significant operational gains in other parts of the country.

In Borno State, combined security forces successfully repelled a terrorist attack on a local government secretariat before restoring calm to the area. Clearance operations have since commenced to track fleeing insurgents.

In Zamfara State, joint security personnel reportedly neutralised several armed bandits during a fierce exchange of gunfire. Another suspect was arrested for allegedly supplying communication equipment to criminal groups operating within the state.

A major interception was recorded in Nasarawa State, where police arrested two female suspects allegedly transporting 551 rounds of live AK-47 ammunition, alongside ten fully loaded AK-47 magazines and additional ammunition. Investigators say efforts are underway to identify and arrest other members of the network.

In Rivers State, security operatives arrested three suspected cult members in connection with the killing of two police officers. During the operation, two Police AK-47 rifles reportedly stolen from the slain officers were recovered.

In Kaduna State, police rescued a kidnapped motor boy after engaging suspected bandits in a gun battle. The victim was safely reunited with the truck driver, while efforts continue to recover the stolen vehicle.

In Kogi State, four kidnapped victims regained their freedom during coordinated bush-combing operations carried out by a joint security task force. Security agencies said the search for the fleeing kidnappers remains active.

In Taraba State, police arrested a suspected kidnap kingpin believed to be linked to a notorious criminal syndicate. Authorities disclosed that intelligence obtained from the suspect could assist ongoing efforts to dismantle the criminal network.

Meanwhile, in Akwa Ibom State, police raided a suspected criminal hideout where four suspects were arrested and substantial quantities of suspected illicit drugs recovered. Two additional suspects were also apprehended in connection with an ongoing high-profile kidnapping investigation.

The nationwide operations underscore the Nigeria Police Force's continued reliance on intelligence-led policing and inter-agency collaboration to combat violent crimes across the country.

The Force said investigations are ongoing in all the reported cases, while efforts have been intensified to apprehend fleeing suspects, recover additional weapons and ensure that all those found culpable are brought before the courts.

The latest security successes have generated fresh conversations among Nigerians over the country's security challenges.

While many have commended security agencies for the coordinated operations and recent arrests, others argue that the long-term measure of success will be sustained intelligence gathering, successful prosecutions, and the prevention of future attacks.
