As the federal government aggressively pushes to attract investments into Nigeria's solid minerals sector and curb the export of raw ores, experts are sounding a note of caution.
At the 4th Annual International Conference and Training Workshop of the Nigerian Association of Exploration Geophysicists in Abuja, professionals warned that Nigeria could face a bitter irony: being forced to import the very minerals it currently extracts and exports if a strict national conservation policy isn't implemented to protect high-grade strategic deposits. While the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development maintains that geoscientific data is being strengthened to drive economic diversification, experts insist that long-term industrial planning must include resource preservation.
What's your take? Should Nigeria slow down its mineral extraction to save resources for future generations, or should it maximize current global market demands? Let's discuss in the comments!
