​Rome / Madrid — The diplomatic friction within the European Union has intensified as Italy digs in its heels over temporary border controls, flatly refusing to bow to ultimatums or threats of retaliation from Spain.

​The stand-off follows a massive, chaotic influx of roughly 72,000 migrants who crossed into the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta from Morocco. While Spain demanded a strict two-day deadline for Italy to dismantle its newly reinstated border checks, the Italian government announced it will maintain the restrictions until at least August 15, refusing to bend to what it termed "intimidation" from Madrid amid a broader EU debate on stringent anti-immigration policies.
