Imo State achieved a major medical milestone with the launch of its inaugural robotic-assisted surgery program at the Imo Specialist Hospital, situated within the Imo Robotics and Oncology Centre (IROC) in Umuguma, Owerri West.
WORLD-CLASS EXPERTISE: The landmark procedure was led by Professor Kingsley Ekwueme—a UK-based Consultant Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgeon and Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons—alongside a collaborative team of local and international specialists.
TARGETING COMPLEX CARE: Focused heavily on oncology and urological conditions like localized prostate cancer, the robotic system allows surgeons unprecedented precision while preserving vital functions and minimizing patient blood loss and recovery times.
COMBATING MEDICAL TOURISM: State officials emphasized that the establishment of IROC and its comprehensive diagnostic suite (MRI, CT scan, mammography) aims to stem the tide of medical tourism by providing advanced, accessible tertiary healthcare locally.
