Nigeria’s education system just got a major reset.


The Federal Ministry of Education and NERDC have rolled out a new National Basic and Senior Secondary Education Curriculum that shifts away from heavy theory to hands-on, competency-based learning aimed at preparing students for the 21st century economy.


Dr. T.N.J. Umunnakwe, Managing Director of Alphabet Nigeria Publishers and resource person for the Federal Ministry of Education and NERDC, announced the reforms during a seminar at Sapphire True Vine International School, Egbu, Owerri North LGA.


According to Dr. Umunnakwe, the curriculum is built around what the job market and technology demand today: vocational skills, technical know-how, digital literacy, and innovation.


WHAT’S NEW IN CLASSROOMS?

The new curriculum introduces practical subjects like:  

- Digital Technologies and Basic Digital Literacy  

- Solar Photovoltaic Installation and Maintenance  

- Fashion Design, Cosmetology, Catering Crafts 

- Computer Hardware and GSM Repairs  

- Horticulture and Crop Production


At the senior secondary level, students will take 5 compulsory core subjects before specializing: English Language, General Mathematics, Digital Technologies, Citizenship and Heritage Studies, and one Trade Subject. After that, they choose Science, Humanities, or Business Studies.

Dr. Umunnakwe warned that the success of the reform depends on teachers.  

_“You cannot teach what you do not know. Teachers must learn before they teach,”_ he said, stressing that adequate teacher training must come before rollout. He noted the curriculum was designed with the realities of robotics and AI in mind.


The proprietress of Sapphire True Vine International School, Lady Ekenna Rachaels, said her school is already ahead — retraining teachers, reviewing schemes of work, and upgrading ICT facilities.


WILL IT WORK?

Participants welcomed the reforms but flagged 3 major concerns:  

1. ICT infrastructure in schools  

2. Continuous teacher training 

3. Affordable textbooks aligned with the new curriculum  


THE BIG QUESTION NOW: Can Nigeria’s schools pull off this ambitious digital + vocational shift, or will poor infrastructure and funding gaps stall it?
