US Supreme Court Clears Texas Age Verification Law for App Stores

The Supreme Court of the United States has cleared the way for the State of Texas to begin enforcing a law requiring app stores to verify users' ages and obtain parental consent before minors download applications or make in-app purchases.


The law, signed in 2025 by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, requires users under the age of 18 to have their accounts linked to a parent or guardian.


Supporters argue the measure will better protect children from harmful online content and give parents greater control over their children's digital activities.


Critics, however, contend that the law raises privacy concerns and could limit internet access for young users while broader constitutional challenges remain before lower courts.


The ruling has reignited global debates over child safety, digital privacy and government regulation of technology companies.


Should countries like Nigeria adopt similar age verification laws to protect children online, or would they threaten digital privacy?
