President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the upgrade of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, into the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology.
The decision followed a proposal sponsored by Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu, who argued that Nasarawa's abundant mineral resources require a specialised institution capable of producing highly skilled professionals for the mining and engineering sectors.
According to the Presidency, the new university will serve as a centre of excellence for teaching, research and technological innovation while supporting Nigeria's drive to diversify its economy through the solid minerals sector.
Government officials said the institution aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda by expanding access to technical education, promoting industrial development and strengthening science and engineering capacity.
Education experts believe the specialised university could become a major driver of innovation in Nigeria's mining industry.
Should Nigeria establish more specialised universities focused on key sectors like mining, agriculture and artificial intelligence instead of creating more conventional universities?
