STOP PRESS: High Court Halts Ezuruezu Mbaise from Organizing 2026 Iri-Ji Festival in Major Victory for Ndi Ezeji

Owerri, Imo State — The bitter cultural and legal tussle over the soul of Mbaise heritage has taken a dramatic turn. Today, July 21, 2026, a High Court of Imo State, sitting at Aboh Mbaise, delivered a landmark ruling that halts the leadership of Ezuruezu Mbaise in its tracks.

In a swift and decisive legal move, the court granted the prayers of Ndi Ezeji Mbaise, issuing an Interim Prohibitive Order of Injunction against the Ezuruezu Association, its servants, committees, workmen, and agents.

The court order explicitly restrains them from:

* Organizing or conducting their proposed Iri-Ji Mbaise 2026 festival.

 * Taking any steps whatsoever under any guise in furtherance of the disputed event.

 * Collecting money or levies from members of the public, autonomous communities, or stakeholders for the festival.


The court order comes on the heels of mounting tensions, ignored peace accords, and fiery public exchanges between the traditional yam custodians (Ndi Ezeji) and the Ezuruezu administration led by Surv. Joe Anosike.

Ndi Ezeji had previously raised alarm over what they termed the systematic desecration of the sacred Ahiajoku tradition, the unapproved ₦200 million community levies, and attempts to strip the August 15th celebration of its spiritual sanctity in favor of commercialized and political events.

With this interim injunction now in full force, any plans by Ezuruezu Mbaise to proceed with their parallel or rebranded celebrations have been legally frozen pending the determination of the substantive suit.
