OWERRI, NIGERIA — A somber atmosphere hangs over the Imo State Police Command following a devastating road accident that has claimed the lives of two frontline officers and left five of their colleagues battling injuries in the hospital.

The incident occurred on Monday, June 29, 2026, along the Amakalu–Umuelemma Road in the Isiala Mbano Local Government Area, intercepting a seven-man police team while they were actively engaged in an official field assignment.


Following the impact, swift emergency evacuation protocols were activated to move the seven heavily injured personnel to nearby clinical facilities.

Despite intensive, round-the-clock interventions by medical teams, two of the officers unfortunately succumbed to the severity of their injuries.


The remaining five personnel are currently under close observation. Hospital sources and police leadership remain highly optimistic about their full recovery as advanced treatments continue.


Reacting to the heartbreaking development, the Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso, expressed deep sorrow over what he termed a monumental loss to the force. He praised the deceased for their unwavering bravery, noting that they died actively defending the peace of their fatherland.

"Their sacrifice, commitment, and stellar dedication in the line of duty will remain forever etched in our honors list," CP Bosso affirmed. "The Command shares deeply in the grief of the families left behind."*


The Police Commissioner has already ordered an uncompromised allocation of the Command’s welfare and medical resources to aid the survival and seamless rehabilitation of the five injured men.


To prevent future operational hazards, the Command has formally instituted a comprehensive crash investigation. Traffic experts and internal review boards are working to piece together the exact sequence of events on the Amakalu–Umuelemma Road.

While the identities of the casualties are being withheld out of respect for standard next-of-kin notification protocols, a steady stream of condolences from the public continues to pour in. The incident heavily highlights the persistent, often unseen perils that security agents brave daily in their constitutional quest to maintain law and order.
