Nigeria's New Curriculum Shifts Focus from Theory to Skills, Technology and Artificial Intelligence

Nigeria's new Basic and Senior Secondary School Curriculum is set to revolutionise classroom learning by placing greater emphasis on digital literacy, vocational education, technology and practical skills.


This was disclosed by the Managing Director of Alphabet Nigeria Publishers and curriculum resource person, Dr. T.N.J. Umunnakwe, during a one-day seminar organised by Sapphire True Vine International School, Egbu, to prepare teachers for the implementation of the new curriculum.


According to him, the curriculum marks a major departure from the traditional theory-based system by introducing competency-driven education designed to prepare learners for the realities of the digital economy.


Among the newly introduced subjects are Digital Technologies, Basic Digital Literacy, Solar Photovoltaic Installation and Maintenance, Fashion Design, Computer Hardware and GSM Repairs, Catering Crafts, Horticulture, Crop Production and Cosmetology.


Dr. Umunnakwe explained that students in senior secondary schools will now study five compulsory core subjects, including Digital Technologies and Citizenship Studies, before specialising in Science, Humanities or Business Studies.


He stressed that teachers must first be trained before implementing the curriculum.


 "You cannot teach what you do not know. Therefore, teachers must learn before they teach."


The proprietress of Sapphire True Vine International School said the institution has already retrained teachers, reviewed its schemes of work and upgraded ICT facilities to ensure smooth implementation.


Participants at the workshop, however, urged governments to provide adequate teaching materials, subsidise textbooks and invest more in ICT infrastructure for schools.
