Lagos Residents May Pay ₦50,000 Fine for Failing to Keep Waste Bins Outside Homes

Residents of Amuwo-Odofin Local Council Development Area in Lagos State could soon face a ₦50,000 fine or six months' imprisonment if they fail to provide waste bins outside their homes.


The proposal is contained in a new environmental amendment bill currently before the council's legislative arm.


Presenting the proposed law during the council's Legislative Week, Majority Leader Hon. Rasaq Ademola said the amendment seeks to address gaps in existing environmental regulations.


If passed, the law will also criminalise open defecation, indiscriminate refuse disposal and other sanitation-related offences.


According to the lawmakers, copies of the law will be distributed to police stations, markets and community associations to ensure residents are adequately informed before enforcement begins.


Environmental advocates say stricter sanitation laws could improve public health, while critics argue that governments should first provide better waste collection services.
