INEC Warns: Compromised Elections Destroy Public Trust

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joshua Amupitan, has warned that electoral corruption remains one of the greatest threats to Nigeria's democracy.


Represented by National Commissioner Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu during an anti-corruption workshop organised for INEC staff ahead of the 2027 General Elections, the commission stressed that credible elections are the foundation of public confidence in democratic governance.


According to INEC, once elections are compromised, citizens lose trust in democratic institutions, weakening national development.


The commission commended the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for partnering with it to strengthen ethical standards among election officials.


The workshop focused on integrity, accountability and practical measures to ensure transparent elections.
