Imo Unveils HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan to End Public Health Threat by 2027

The Imo State Government has officially launched the Imo State HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan (2025–2027), describing it as a bold roadmap aimed at ending HIV/AIDS as a public health threat across the state.


Unveiling the strategic document on behalf of the government, Deputy Governor Lady Chinyere Ekomaru reaffirmed the administration's commitment to evidence-based interventions that will strengthen the fight against HIV/AIDS.


She commended the Imo State Agency for the Control of AIDS (IMO-SACA), the Ministry of Health and development partners for producing what she described as a comprehensive and practical framework that aligns with the National HIV/AIDS Strategic Framework and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 on good health and well-being.


Lady Ekomaru stressed that government alone cannot achieve the ambitious targets, urging health institutions, civil society organisations, religious bodies, traditional rulers and development partners to work together to reduce new infections and improve access to quality healthcare.


According to her, the state will prioritise HIV prevention, expand testing services, ensure uninterrupted access to antiretroviral drugs, protect vulnerable groups, promote gender equality and tackle the stigma that continues to discourage many people from seeking treatment.


The highlight of the event was the formal adoption of the validated 2025–2027 Strategic Plan by stakeholders drawn from government ministries, health institutions, civil society organisations, faith-based groups and traditional institutions.


With the new roadmap now in place, expectations are high that Imo will accelerate efforts toward eliminating HIV/AIDS as a major public health challenge.
