Imo Deputy Governor Backs Youth Football Initiative, Says Sports Can Unlock Talent and Create Jobs

The Deputy Governor of Imo State, Lady Chinyere Ekeomaru, has reaffirmed the state government's commitment to youth empowerment through sports, describing football as a powerful platform for discovering talents, creating opportunities and steering young people towards productive ventures.


Lady Ekomaru gave the assurance when she received a delegation of enterprising Imo youths led by Engr. Ugochukwu Egbunine, in partnership with OneDosh, at the Government House, Owerri.


Commending the group for initiating a football competition aimed at engaging young people across the state, the deputy governor said such programmes complement the government's efforts to reduce youth unemployment, promote social inclusion and nurture future champions.


She noted that Governor Hope Uzodimma remains committed to youth development, pointing out that his administration has empowered thousands of young people through employment opportunities, political appointments, vocational training and digital skills acquisition programmes.


According to her, initiatives that combine sports with talent discovery and empowerment deserve encouragement, as they offer young people a positive alternative to crime, drug abuse and other social vices while opening doors to professional careers.


Lady Ekomaru assured the organisers of the state's support and a conducive environment for the successful hosting of the competition, expressing optimism that the tournament would produce footballers capable of representing Imo State and Nigeria on national and international stages.


She also urged the youths to remain focused, disciplined and committed to excellence, stressing that talent flourishes when matched with hard work, determination and the right opportunities.


The visit highlights the growing recognition of sports as a catalyst for youth development and economic growth, especially at a time when many young Nigerians are seeking platforms to showcase their abilities beyond the classroom.
