Historic NYSC Reform Approved as Federal Government Moves to Civilian Leadership

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the most comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) since its establishment 53 years ago.


The landmark decision will transform the scheme into a civilian-led, skills-oriented institution focused on youth empowerment, productivity, and national economic growth.


Under the reforms, the NYSC's operational leadership will be headed by a civilian, while the military will continue providing security for corps members nationwide.


FEC has directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Minister of Youth Development to amend the NYSC Act and relevant regulations to pave the way for immediate implementation.


Special Adviser to the President on Policy Coordination, Hadiza Bala Usman, said the reforms align with President Bola Tinubu's vision of building a $1 trillion economy by equipping Nigerian youths with practical skills and entrepreneurial capacity.


Observers say the overhaul could redefine national service by placing greater emphasis on innovation, job creation, and economic productivity.
