Healthcare Crisis: LUTH Resident Doctors’ Strike Enters Day 8 with No End in Sight

IDI-ARABA, LAGOS — Medical services at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, have ground to a near-total halt as the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) continues its indefinite strike, now past its eighth day.

The strike has left hundreds of patients stranded, with routine outpatient consultations, elective surgeries, and non-emergency services suspended across the tertiary institution. While senior consultants and emergency staff are managing life-or-death cases, the hospital’s daily capacity has been severely crippled.

The doctors’ demands center on severe welfare grievances, including:

 * Provision of adequate residential accommodation.

 * Payment of long-outstanding salaries owed to newly employed doctors.

 * Immediate restoration of call-duty meal allowances.

The union disclosed that repeated meetings with hospital management yielded no concrete resolutions, forcing them to sustain the action. The resident doctors are now appealing directly to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to intervene before the disruption deepens further.
