Guardians of the Covenant: Why Ndi Ezeji Are Not the Aggressors in the Battle for Mbaise’s Soul

"We are not the aggressors o!"

This was the collective, heartfelt cry of Ndi Ezeji Mbaise upon reviewing the brewing storm over the 2026 Iri-Ji Mbaise festival.

To the outside observer, the back-and-forth between the traditional yam custodians and the leadership of Ezuruezu Mbaise might look like a petty turf war.

But step closer, look at the paper trail, examine the history, and a very different picture emerges: this is not an aggressive power grab by Ndi Ezeji. It is a desperate, defensive stand to protect an ancient, sacred covenant from being commercialized, secularized, and stripped of its spiritual essence.

If anyone is defending their home, their heritage, and their forefathers, it is Ndi Ezeji. Here is a closer look at the true bone of contention and why the custodians are entirely in the right.

THE BONE OF CONTENTION: IS IRI-JI A SACRED THANKSGIVING OR A FUNDRAISING CARNIVAL?

At the heart of this feud lies a fundamental ideological collision. For Ndi Ezeji, Iri-Ji is not a social club's anniversary, a political rally, or a mechanism for revenue generation. It is a sacred, spiritual pact between Ndi Mbaise and the Almighty God through Ahiajoku, anchored strictly to the historic date of August 15th.

The bone of contention is that the current administration of Ezuruezu Mbaise, led by Surv. Joe Anosike, has aggressively attempted to rebrand and secularize this sacred institution under the guise of "modernization and Christianisation." By reducing Ndi Ezeji—the statutory, spiritual pillars of the yam culture—to "merely a social club," Ezuruezu opened the door to practices that custodians view as absolute abominations:

SELLING THE SACRED STAGE: Turning the solemn thanksgiving of the new yam into a platform for personal awards, chieftaincy titles, and partisan recognitions in exchange for financial patronage.

THE ₦200 MILLION LEVIES: Slapping over 90 autonomous communities with compulsory ₦2,000,000 levies each, despite the glaring reality that the event was already fully sponsored by the Chairman of Aboh Mbaise Local Government. When traditional custodians ask, "What do you intend to do with that money?", it is a cry for accountability, not aggression.

A HISTORY OF PATIENCE: THE DOCUMENTATION OF BAD FAITH

If Ndi Ezeji were aggressors, they would have rushed to the media at the first sign of disrespect. Instead, the public record shows an agonizing exercise in extreme patience and dialogue:

IGNORED LETTERS: Surv. Anosike’s administration has consistently blown past over seven formal letters sent to them, treating the custodians with administrative contempt.

THE BROKEN PEACE OF JULY 2025: Last year, under the expert moderation of Ezeji Alozie Aguwa (President of Mbaise USA) and Barr. Emeka Ibeh (DG, Mbaise Global Foundation), all parties sat down, hashed out an agreement, and signed a truce. Ezuruezu promptly violated every single material term of that agreement without a word of apology.

THE DISAPPEARING ACT: Ezuruezu leadership repeatedly stood up stakeholders, including the Chairman of the Mbaise Council of Traditional Rulers and local government chairmen, refusing to cooperate even when safe-saving compromises were handed to them on a platter.

When you have exhausted every arbitration table, begged for peace, and watched your sacred traditions—down to dressing impostors in sacred regalia and using foreign yams—mocked, standing your ground is no longer aggression. It is duty.

PROTECTING THE INTEGRITY OF ISHI OVU

Ndi Ezeji are simply saying: You want to host a cultural day or a modern social jamboree? Go ahead. But do not touch August 15th, do not impersonate our rites, and do not use our names to legitimize an event we have no part in.

By insisting on performing the statutory Iwa-Ji rites at Ishi Ovu Ezeji, Eke Ngwuru, on August 15, 2026, Ndi Ezeji are fulfilling a generational trust. They are making sure that the spiritual anchor of Mbaise is not lost to political opportunism and commercial greed.

VERDICT: THE CUSTODIANS ARE SAVING OUR HERITAGE

When history judges this era, it will see Ndi Ezeji not as combatants spoiling for a fight, but as resolute sentinels standing at the gate. They are protecting the sacred against the profane. Far from being the aggressors, Ndi Ezeji are the last line of defense keeping the true spirit of Mbaise alive.
