FG Moves to End Building Collapse with New National Construction Regulatory Framework

The Federal Government has unveiled plans to introduce a comprehensive regulatory framework aimed at tackling Nigeria's recurring building collapses and restoring confidence in the construction industry.


Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, disclosed that the proposed policy will establish a coordinated regulatory system for the construction sector, improve public safety and boost the industry's contribution to the nation's economy.


Speaking while receiving the leadership of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), led by its President, Professor Sadiq Abubakar, the minister said the draft framework would be presented to stakeholders before the end of the month ahead of its submission to the Federal Executive Council (FEC).


According to him, the policy will harmonise the responsibilities of professional bodies in the built environment and enforce strict compliance with building regulations and professional standards.


Dangiwa blamed the rising cases of building collapse on weak regulatory oversight, which he said has allowed unqualified practitioners to infiltrate the construction industry, resulting in poor-quality projects and avoidable tragedies.


The proposed reforms are expected to strengthen accountability among engineers, architects, builders and other professionals involved in construction.
