Disaster Averted in Owerri as 30,000-Litre Petrol Tanker Crashes on Wetheral Road

A potential tragedy was narrowly avoided in Owerri on Saturday after a 30,000-litre tanker loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) overturned along the ever-busy Wetheral Road, triggering fears of a massive fire outbreak or explosion.


The tanker reportedly lost control after the driver swerved to avoid hitting a pedestrian before crashing onto its side, spilling panic among motorists and residents.


Emergency responders from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Imo State Fire Service and other agencies quickly mobilised to the scene, cordoning off the area and safely transferring the petrol into another tanker to prevent disaster.


Security operatives restricted movement around the accident scene, while motorists were advised to use alternative routes through MCC Road and Cherubim Junction as recovery efforts continued.


As of Saturday evening, emergency officials remained at the scene monitoring the operation and working to restore normal traffic.


Residents commended the swift response of emergency workers, noting that the incident could have had devastating consequences had the tanker exploded.
