Cultural Heritage in Motion: Obohia Community Kicks Off Preparations for 2026 Eyirieyi Obohia Festival

OBOHIA IMO STATE — High culture and tradition took center stage in Elekenowasi, Obohia, as the community officially commenced activities leading up to the highly anticipated 2026 Irei Obohia Festival.

The landmark journey began at the palace of His Royal Highness, Eze Ezeji Nicholas Nzenwa Nwahiri, with the sacred Iwa - Oji (breaking of the kola nut) ceremony.

Leading the Ihite delegation, Chief Athanasius Nwambara presented the sacred kola nut to the royal father, following strict, age-old customs governing who can retrieve and present the kola when it falls in Ihite.

Speaking on the cultural significance of the ritual, HRH Eze Nwahiri declared that the success of the ceremony signals that preparations are fully underway for the grand festival, scheduled for August 11, 2026. He urged all Obohia sons and daughters—both at home and across the diaspora—to use the festival as a rallying point for peace, love, and unity.

Reaffirming the community's commitment to ancestral traditions, the Traditional Prime Minister of Elekenowasi Chief (Rtd. Deputy Comptroller of Immigration) Eze Nwaniwu Umunna, praised the traditional ruler for keeping the youth and elders actively engaged in preserving their identity.
