Former House of Representatives candidate for Owerri Federal Constituency, Dr. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has called for the comprehensive redevelopment of the historic Owerri-Obibi Market, describing it as a commercial asset that deserves urgent modernisation.

In a development proposal released at the weekend, she advocated the construction of modern stalls, improved drainage systems, solar-powered street lighting, better waste management facilities and enhanced security infrastructure.

According to her, transforming the market into a modern commercial hub would improve sanitation, attract more investment, increase trading activities and preserve its historical significance.

She argued that upgrading traditional markets is critical to stimulating local economic growth while creating a safer and more organised environment for traders and customers.

The proposal has sparked fresh conversations about the condition of many old markets across Imo State.

If government has limited resources, should renovating traditional markets be given priority over building new ones?
