Aviation Unions Issue 14-Day Ultimatum to Airlines Over Billions in Unremitted Charges

Nigeria's aviation workers have threatened nationwide industrial action unless airlines remit billions of naira allegedly collected on behalf of aviation agencies.


The unions, including the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria and the National Union of Air Transport Employees, issued a 14-day ultimatum, warning that continued non-remittance of statutory five per cent ticket sales charges could disrupt flight operations.


The unions said the outstanding funds belong to agencies such as the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and are critical for safety oversight and regulatory functions.


In a joint statement, labour leaders accused some airlines of withholding funds collected from passengers, thereby depriving aviation agencies of resources needed to maintain safe and efficient operations.


They warned that failure to resolve the issue within the stipulated period could trigger industrial action across the aviation sector.


If the dispute leads to flight disruptions, who should Nigerians hold responsible—the airlines, regulators or the government?
