World Environment Day:  Cleaner Streets, Bigger Challenges: Stakeholders Reflect on Imo's Environmental Future

As the world marked World Environment Day 2026, Environmental Experts, Government Officials and residents renewed calls for stronger action against pollution, poor waste management and climate-related challenges.


The theme of this year's celebration, "No Delay, Act Today," placed urgency on environmental protection and sustainable living.


In Imo State, Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Barrister Ejike Emenike, highlighted achievements recorded under the current administration, including aggressive refuse evacuation, improved sanitation and efforts to restore cleanliness across Owerri and surrounding areas.


According to the commissioner, the State inherited serious Environmental Challenges ranging from indiscriminate Waste Disposal and blocked drainages to Urban Flooding and weak enforcement systems.


While acknowledging progress, Environmental Experts insist that much more remains to be done.


Environmental Engineer Franklin Obelam argued that the future of waste management lies not merely in evacuation but in recycling, waste classification and the proper handling of hazardous materials.


He called for the establishment of modern recycling facilities capable of transforming waste into economic opportunities while protecting public health.


Residents also joined the conversation, stressing that government efforts alone cannot guarantee a cleaner environment without behavioural change from citizens.


Experts warn that climate change, flooding, pollution and unmanaged waste continue to threaten public health, infrastructure and economic productivity.


As conversations around sustainability grow louder, many believe the challenge is no longer whether environmental action is necessary but whether it is happening fast enough.


The debate now shifts from promises to measurable results.


Can cleaner cities, effective recycling and environmental responsibility become a permanent culture rather than occasional campaigns?
