Governor Hope Uzodimma has challenged Nigerian Universities of Technology to take the lead in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, warning that failure to adapt could leave the country economically vulnerable and technologically dependent on other Nations.


The Governor delivered the warning while presenting the 38th Convocation Lecture of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), titled: "Nigerian Universities of Technology Must Lead in the Fourth Industrial Revolution or Jeopardise the Nation's Future."


Addressing academics, students, policymakers and industry leaders at the Professor C.O.E. Onwuliri Conference Hall, Uzodimma argued that Nigeria stands at a critical crossroads where technology, innovation and artificial intelligence are rapidly reshaping Economies across the Globe.


According to him, Universities of Technology can no longer afford to operate with outdated Curricula while young people acquire Digital Skills from Online Platforms and Innovation Hubs outside the Traditional Classroom.


"The question before this Country is whether we are moving with the revolution or standing still while a generation of technologically curious young people walks out of an Economy that never gave them the tools to succeed," he said.


The Governor highlighted Federal initiatives including Nigeria's Artificial Intelligence Strategy, Digital Skills Programmes and Technology-focused funding interventions aimed at positioning the Country for future competitiveness.


He also showcased Imo State's efforts through Imo Digital City Limited, describing it as a platform designed to support innovation, startup incubation, mentorship and technology-driven entrepreneurship.


Uzodimma warned that failure to reform Technological Education could result in Economic Marginalisation, worsening brain drain, youth unemployment and declining global competitiveness.


His Lecture has sparked renewed debate about whether Nigerian Universities are producing graduates for the future Economy or preparing them for jobs that may soon disappear.


As Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Automation continue to transform Industries Worldwide, many observers say the Governor's challenge raises a fundamental question:

Are Nigerian Universities ready for the future, or is the future already leaving them behind?
