Sea of Candles / Faith: Hundreds Gather at St. Anthony’s Umunama to Close May Devotion

EZINIHITTE MBAISE — It was a breathtaking sight to behold on the evening of Sunday, May 31, 2026, as the grounds of St. Anthony’s Catholic Parish, Umunama, were illuminated by a glowing sea of candlelight.

Between 300 and 400 faithful—comprising men, women, and children—gathered in deep reverence to commemorate the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, marking the grand finale of the 2026 May Devotion.

A MARATHON OF PRAYER AND PROCESSION

The atmosphere turned electric yet deeply spiritual around 5:30 PM as the Candle Rosary Procession commenced. Walking shoulder to shoulder, the massive crowd raised their voices and their candles in unison, embarking on a powerful spiritual journey.

The congregation demonstrated remarkable devotion by praying all twenty decades of the Rosary, followed by the chanting of the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The multi-hour event reached its spiritual peak inside the church, concluding with a solemn Eucharistic Benediction that left many in attendance visibly moved.

INTENTIONS FOR A TROUBLED WORLD

Led by the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Christsanctus Ukagbuomuma Onwumere (affectionately known by the faithful as Alaukwu Ogbe), the community laid their heaviest burdens and highest hopes at the altar. Prayers of intercession were offered for:

 Individual Families & St. Anthony's Parish

 The Diocese and Imo State

 The Nigerian Nation and the Entire World

 The Eternal Repose of Departed Brothers and Sisters

"To God be the glory for a successful celebration," whispered an exhausted but radiant parishioner at the close of the event. "Seeing the children holding candles alongside the elders shows that our faith in Mbaise remains as strong as ever."
