A fresh controversy may be brewing over oil revenue distribution in Nigeria after Governor Hope Uzodimma accused oil operators and regulators of failing to properly account for crude oil and gas production in Imo State.


The Governor made the allegation while receiving officials of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) at the Government House in Owerri.


According to him, Imo remains one of Nigeria's oil-producing states but has allegedly been denied significant revenue because of inaccurate production reporting, inadequate metering systems and disputed boundary classifications.


Uzodimma urged the commission to verify, meter and properly compute oil and gas output from the state to ensure that Imo receives what he described as its rightful share of national revenue.


The Governor argued that transparency in production figures is essential if states are to benefit fairly from resources extracted within their territories.


His remarks come amid growing national conversations about fiscal federalism, resource control and equitable revenue allocation among states.


Supporters believe the demand could help correct long-standing discrepancies in revenue distribution.


Critics, however, argue that the issue raises broader questions about accountability in Nigeria's oil sector and whether producing communities are truly benefiting from the wealth generated from their lands.


With oil revenues remaining a major source of government income, the governor's position may reopen debates over who gets what from Nigeria's natural resources.


The bigger question remains whether improved monitoring and metering could transform the fortunes of oil-producing states across the country.
