Government reaffirms determination to confront the scourge of Cancer

OWERRI, NIGERIA — The Imo State Government has reaffirmed its determination to confront the scourge of cancer by prioritizing affordable, accessible, and seamless healthcare delivery for its citizens through robust strategic partnerships.

​Governor Hope Uzodimma made this declaration at the Government House in Owerri while receiving a high-powered delegation from the First Ladies Against Cancer (FLAC). The coalition, a powerful alliance of current and former state first ladies dedicated to scaling up oncology advocacy across Nigeria, was led by the First Lady of Imo State, Chief (Barr.) Mrs. Chioma Uzodimma.

​Addressing the standard of governance required to tackle modern health crises, Governor Uzodimma emphasized that subvented healthcare is a fundamental right that his administration is actively working to secure.

​“Quality healthcare remains a critical objective of every Government, delivering such services at little or no cost to the people and ensuring that access remains seamless,” Governor Uzodimma remarked. “That is why we have continued to partner with all stakeholders in the best interest of our people.”

CONFRONTING THE CANCER SCOURGE

​During the interactive session, the Governor outlined the state’s current medical interventions, noting that the battle against cancer requires a mixture of infrastructure, early detection funding, and continuous public education.

​“While addressing a delegation of the First Ladies Against Cancer (FLAC), led by my wife, Chief (Barr.) Mrs. Chioma Uzodimma, I reaffirmed our resolve to confronting the scourge of cancer and highlighted the various initiatives and interventions we have implemented so far,” the Governor stated.

​Medical experts have frequently noted that cancer care in sub-Saharan Africa suffers from late presentations and high out-of-pocket costs. By focusing on "little or no cost" services, the Imo State Government aims to dismantle the financial barriers that often prevent early diagnosis and consistent treatment for vulnerable populations, particularly women and children.

​A UNIFIED FRONT FOR HEALTHCARE

​The visit of the FLAC delegation underscores a growing synergy between state executives and advocacy groups aimed at transforming the landscape of oncology care in Nigeria. Governor Uzodimma praised the coalition for its relentless grassroots campaign, which continues to bring international best practices and critical awareness to local communities.

​Looking forward, the Governor pledged that Imo State would scale up its institutional support to match the energy of the advocacy group, ensuring that healthcare policies translate directly into saved lives.

​“As a State, we remain committed to deepening collaboration with stakeholders such as FLAC, whose dedication and advocacy continue to complement Government’s efforts to improve cancer awareness, prevention, treatment, and support services,” Uzodimma concluded.
