FUTO @30: Uzodimma to Deliver Convocation Lecture, Says Tech Universities Must Lead or Nigeria Risks Falling Behind

Governor Hope Uzodimma is set to take centre stage this Thursday as he delivers the 30th Convocation Lecture of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), with a bold message expected on the future of innovation, education, and national survival in the digital age.


The lecture, scheduled to hold at the Professor C.O.E Conference Centre, is expected to attract political leaders, academics, researchers, captains of industry, and members of the university community.


Governor Uzodimma, an alumnus of FUTO and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, will speak on the topic: “Nigerian Universities of Technology Must Lead in the Fourth Industrial Revolution or Jeopardise the Nation’s Future.”


According to the Imo State Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Chief Declan Emelumba, the lecture reflects a broader push to reposition higher institutions toward technological innovation, modern research, and future-focused learning.


Emelumba said the governor believes Universities must adapt quickly to changing realities or risk producing graduates unprepared for a rapidly evolving Global Economy shaped by artificial intelligence, robotics, digital systems, renewable technology, and automation.


He also described Uzodimma as a strong advocate of functional education, noting that his administration currently oversees four state-owned universities in Imo State, including newly established institutions focused on specialised fields.


Supporters see the lecture as timely in a country battling unemployment and skills mismatch, while critics argue Nigeria must first solve basic education and infrastructure problems before dreaming of a tech revolution.


The bigger question now is whether Nigerian Universities are truly preparing Students for the future — or merely preparing them for certificates.


Hard question: Are Nigerian Universities producing innovators for the future or graduates for unemployment?
