Awka, Anambra State – Police operatives in Anambra State have neutralized four suspected armed gang members during a gun battle in Orumba South Local Government Area, in what security authorities describe as a major breakthrough in ongoing efforts to combat violent crime in the state.


The operation reportedly took place on June 26 along the Oboji-Ajali Road following an armed confrontation between security operatives and suspected secessionist-linked gunmen.


According to the Anambra State Police Command, officers were conducting a visibility and confidence-building patrol when they received credible intelligence regarding the movement of heavily armed suspects operating in a white Toyota Sienna bus.


Acting on the intelligence, security personnel intercepted the vehicle, leading to an exchange of gunfire during which four of the suspects were fatally wounded.


In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Tochukwu Ikenga, security operatives recovered a significant cache of weapons, ammunition, and explosive materials from the scene.


Items reportedly recovered include one General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) loaded with 53 rounds of linked live ammunition, two AK-47 rifles with magazines, 29 rounds of 7.62 x 39mm ammunition, 13 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition, and four undetonated Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).


The recovery has been described by security analysts as one of the most substantial seizures recorded in recent months within the area.


While residents have welcomed the operation as a step toward restoring security, concerns remain over the continued circulation of sophisticated weapons among criminal groups operating across parts of the Southeast.


Observers say the incident raises fresh questions about the sources of these weapons, the networks supplying them, and the broader security challenges confronting the region.


Police authorities have assured residents that ongoing operations will continue to target criminal elements threatening public peace and safety.


As security agencies intensify their crackdown, citizens are being urged to provide timely information that could assist law enforcement efforts.
