Federal Government Injects ₦6bn Direct Cash Relief to 278,000 Vulnerable Households in Imo State

OWERRI, IMO STATE — More than ₦6 billion has been injected directly into the pockets of struggling families across Imo State, as the Federal Government ramps up its massive Household Prosperity and Empowerment Cash Transfer Programme.

The scale of the intervention was laid bare during a high-profile field assessment by the Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard Doro. Traveling across the State to engage directly with local families, the Minister revealed that 278,727 vulnerable households in Imo State are now enrolled in the life-changing relief scheme.

The initiative bypasses middlemen entirely, depositing a total of ₦75,000 directly into the bank accounts of verified recipients, split into three monthly installments of ₦25,000.


With billions moving through the system, Minister Doro used his visit to draw a hard line against corruption and local extortion. He issued a stern warning to beneficiaries to guard their money against fraudulent actors claiming to be "agents" or facilitators.

"Participation in this programme remains completely free," Dr. Doro emphasized. "Any attempt by persons to demand money from beneficiaries should be reported immediately."


The direct-to-bank mechanism was designed specifically to ensure transparency and accountability, ensuring that the full economic relief reaches the ordinary Nigerians who need it most without being chipped away by bureaucratic leakages.


The true impact of the multi-billion naira injection is already rippling through Imo State’s grassroots economy. Rather than just using the cash for immediate survival, many beneficiaries are treating the funds as micro-capital to jumpstart their livelihoods.


Individual Relief Package: ₦75,000 Total

[₦25,000] First Installment   --> Immediate relief & essentials

[₦25,000] Second Installment  --> Micro-investments (seeds, livestock, trade)

[₦25,000] Third Installment   --> Long-term household stability


Mrs. Amadi, a local farmer who met with the Minister, shared how the ₦75,000 package fundamentally altered her season. Instead of struggling alone on her plot, she used the initial cash injections to hire farm laborers.

"This investment is going to bring a much bigger harvest and better income for my family in the coming season," she told the delegation.


Addressing potential skepticism surrounding the rollout, the State Programme Manager, Mr. Odoemenam Onyemaechi, firmly dismissed any rumors that the list of recipients had been hijacked for political leverage.

Onyemaechi maintained that the selection process was strictly data-driven, rigorous, and completely blind to partisan politics. "Only qualified and verified beneficiaries were enrolled based on established criteria," he assured the public.

With the successful rollout in Imo State—heavily praised by federal officials for the seamless cooperation of the state government—stakeholders are optimistic that the continuous flow of cash will continue to act as an economic catalyst, lifting thousands out of immediate poverty and stimulating small-scale trade across the region.
