"Certificates Alone Won’t Save You"—Governor Uzodimma Urges Radical Curriculum Overhaul to Inject AI, Robotics Into Nigerian Polytechnics

​OWERRI — In a move to radically alter the future of Technical Education in Nigeria, Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has called for an urgent review of the Country's Polytechnic Curriculum.

​Hosting a high-powered delegation from the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) at the Executive Council Chambers in Government House, Owerri, the Governor delivered a blunt reality check: the Global Economy now values practical innovation over mere paper qualifications.  

​Uzodimma, who has consistently championed digital transformation in the Southeast, warned that the value of Polytechnic Degrees risks total obsolescence unless institutions immediately pivot toward the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.  


​Addressing the ASUP Delegation—led by Mr. Chibuzor Asomugha, who represented the Union's National President, Dr. Shammah Kpanja—Governor Uzodimma tackled the long-standing stigma surrounding Polytechnic Certificates in Nigeria.

​He noted that the surest way to restore total integrity and premium value to Polytechnic Graduates is to ensure they possess skills that the modern workforce desperately needs.

​"The future belongs to those with the right skills," Uzodimma stated plainly. "In a few years, Certificates alone may no longer guarantee employment; people want to know what you can do."

​The Governor noted that the world has become aggressively science and technology-driven. He tasked technical institutions with breaking away from outdated teaching templates and adopting cutting-edge learning frameworks centered around Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, biotechnology, and advanced knowledge transfer.


​Beyond the Classroom, Uzodimma referenced his active interventions in stabilizing the academic calendar. He highlighted his ongoing contributions toward resolving deep-seated misunderstandings between ASUP and the Federal Government, emphasizing that constant strikes only damage the credibility of the sector.  

​However, the Governor made it clear that transforming these institutions is a massive national task that cannot be carried out by lecturers alone.

​To achieve an industrial revolution, Uzodimma mapped out a collaborative path forward:

​A UNIFIED FRONT: Active synergy between ASUP, the executive arm of government, and federal/state legislators.

MARKET ASSESSMENTS: Demanding that academic unions conduct extensive labor-market research to ensure their courses match actual industry vacancies.  

SUSTAINED FUNDING: A push for strategic investments in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) infrastructures across polytechnics and universities of technology.  

​"By working collaboratively with Government, Legislators, and other Stakeholders, we can revitalize our Polytechnics and Universities of Technology to drive the industrial transformation our Nation requires," Uzodimma maintained, pledging to champion this cause at any level of leadership he occupies.
